Small things that matter in a war

During Anglo Sikh war apart from the big things like the lack of
leadership etc that decided the outcome of war,there were some small
things that mattered.I read somewhere that there were Sikh soldiers
among others on both sides.The soldiers who were on the British side
had warm socks and good quality shoes.It is because the British had a
better experience of fighting in the winter season.
It is important to learn from the past as life is, perhaps, no less
than a battle.
